THE PLACENTA:
So much more than a disposable organ!

Placentophagy (from ‘placenta’ + ‘phagy’ = to eat) is the act of mammals eating the placenta of their young after childbirth. Most placental mammals participate in placentophagy, including herbivores and primates. Fortunately you don’t have to eat the placenta like a piece of meat to obtain all the benefits that ingesting it can bring. Virginia at Natural Beginnings can prepare your placenta, dry it, grind it up and encapsulate it so that all you need to do is simply pop a few capsules!

The placenta contains high levels of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins stimulate involution (the shrinking or returning to former size) of the uterus. The placenta also contains oxytocin. Oxytocin eases birth stress and causes the smooth muscles around the mammary cells to contract and eject milk.

Women who have taken their placenta pills have reported the following:

  • an easing or delaying of postpartum depression
  • an increase in their breastmilk production

  • a quicker end to postpartum bleeding
  • an easing of stress
  • a big boost of energy which is noticeable between when taking their pills and not

I have prepared over 300 placentas into capsules and I can prepare your placenta in numerous ways, returned to you usually within 1 to 2 days. Each service includes encapsulation (raw or TCM-inspired), cord keepsake, placenta print, information packet and photo of your placenta (membranes removed) SMS’d to your phone.

Placenta Remedies and services

RAW Placenta Encapsulation – $300

Raw food activists believe that steaming the placenta destroys some of the essential nutrients. Using this option provides a burst of energy upfront and great hormone stabilization.

The Raw method involves draining the placenta of excess blood, trimming of the membranes (or ‘sac’ which encases the baby), then after doing a ‘Tree of Life’ print and trimming off the cord to fashion into a keepsake, I slice the placenta into thin slices, put them in a dehydrator until they are crispy dry, put the dried pieces into a high power food processor, process it into a fine powder, then put the placenta powder into vegetarian capsules.

This services includes:

  • Pickup and drop-off of placenta/remedy within the Sutherland Shire and St George areas* (or drop off and pick up from my house in Caringbah South).
  • Your own placenta dried, ground and put into capsules (usually between 100 – 200)
    Information packet
  • Placenta ‘Tree of life’ print
  • Dried cord keepsake – heart or spiral shaped.
  • Photo of your placenta SMS’d to your mobile phone
*An extra charge of $40 for out of my area such as Bankstown, RPA and RHW / POW Randwick hospitals

TCM Placenta Encapsulation – $320

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is believed that after the placenta has been born, the new mother’s uterus is left in a “cold” state. So the Traditional Chinese Medicine method of preparation differs from the raw method in that the placenta is gently steamed with fresh lemon and ginger, before the dehydration, processing and encapsulation process. This method is thought to be warming and healing to the uterus, as well as bringing out the placenta’s healing and tonifying properties. *Due to the steaming process, there may be slightly less capsules than the raw method of preparation.

This service includes:

– Pick up and drop-off of placenta/remedy within the Sutherland Shire and St George areas* (or drop off and pick up from my house in Caringbah South)
– Your own placenta dried, prepared in the TCM-inspired style, ground and put into capsules (usually between 80 – 160)
– Placenta ‘Tree of life’ print
– Dried cord keepsake – heart or spiral shaped

– Photo of your placenta SMS’d to your mobile phone

*An extra charge of $50 for out of my area such as Bankstown, RPA and RHW / POW Randwick hospitals

“I just want to thank you for your services. The whole process was so smooth and easy. The smoothie was just what I needed after fasting for 12hrs really felt it gave my body the nourishment it needed especially as I had had a 1.2 ltr PPH.
You made it so easy for Liam to give you my placenta and pick up the pills etc. I love the picture of my placenta you sent me. Love to see what nourished my little Olly and now helping me.
I can’t believe I never met you with all of this. Thank you so much.”

Placenta Tincture – $50

Putting part of your placenta in tincture form is another way to stretch out its longevity. A small portion of placenta is added to alcohol and steeped for 6 weeks. Some of the benefits may include hormone stabilization in your postpartum cycles, less bleeding during those cycles, energy and for menopause years down the road. The female child may also benefit from placental tincture once she begins her menstruation cycles.

Placenta Cream – $30

A skin cream of our placenta and a variety of healing herbs and oils may offer healing properties to c-section scars once they are healed, haemorrhoids, perineal tearing, cracked or blistered nipples, eczema, sun burn, nappy rash (can be made cloth nappy safe!), skin irritation and more. The herbs added to your cream or balm are calendula, comfrey and chickweed; zinc; as well as essential oils of lavender, chamomile and geranium, making it a super soothing ointment that smells amazing!

Placenta Print and Cord Keepsakes -$50

These services are free with any encapsulation purchase. Your beautiful placenta is painted with blood (or for an extra $20 it can be done with natural wholefood colours which make the print far more vibrant, seen below!) to make a forever lasting imprint of your placenta. Your umbilical cord is then removed and dried into a heart shape, spiral or first letter of your baby’s name (if long enough).

Cord Dreamcatcher – $90 alone, or $70 with encapsulation.

Have your dried umbilical cord made into a Dream Catcher for your baby. The cord is dried into a circle which encases the dream catcher, and the web is hand woven with beads and wild bird feathers attached to the bottom. It is then hung above the bed and is said to catch people’s dreams. Bad dreams stay in the net and disappear with the light of day. Good dreams pass through and slide down the feathers to the sleeper. A lovely keepsake that will stay with your baby as it grows.
